Evil Eye Gloves - Crochet Version

Krista Suh's newest craftivist movement is to create a sea of eyes at the March for our Lives to show congress we are watching and we are holding them accountable. She is organizing the effort to collect gloves in Washington, DC. Check out her website here to see where to send the gloves.

I was immediately on board and I designed my own knit colorwork version (see it here). I challenged my friend Silke, the most talented crochet designer I know, to design a crocheted pair of gloves. She did not disappoint and came up with these awesome gloves. These glove are not simply an eye appliquéd onto simple gloves, they are just one layer throughout. She enlisted her friend Stefanie to help her write up the pattern. Stefanie originally created the pattern in German and then translated it to English. Check out more of Stefanie's designs here: http://kreativmittaeschwerk.blogspot.com/ They gave me permission to put the English pattern on my website and I am honored to help share it with everyone.

GET THE PATTERN HERE> Click here to download the pattern. Click here to see the original German version of the pattern.

This pattern is very thorough and has step-by-step instructions so hopefully even beginning crocheters can make it. Comment below if you have any questions about the pattern and I'll run them by Silke and Stefanie.

This crochet eye could also be sewn onto simple knit or crochet fingerless gloves.

DIY T-shirt Yarn Tutorial

Here is a quick post with an illustration on how to make T-shirt yarn for projects such as a T-shirt yarn rug, arm knit cowl, or - one of my next projects (spoiler alert) - this cat cave. The next time I cut a T-shirt into yarn, I will add step-by-step photos to accompany this cartoon. Enjoy!

Flower Headband

This headband completes the set of winter wear accessories I made my friend Casie.  Casie is from Minnesota and currently lives near Chicago.  Since she encounters cold and windy weather a lot, I decided to make her super warm mittens, a cowl, and this headband.  I visited her a few weeks ago and gave her the cowl.  Since visiting, I made her mittens with flaps (also pictured below) and this headband with a crocheted flower.

If you want to buy this headband, check out Craftimsim on Etsy and feel free to contact me for a custom order.

I designed this headband based on the cream headband she had.  These seem to be all the rage this year, and I was dying to try to knit the headband and crochet a flower for the headband.  To make the headband as warm as possible, I used super bulky yarn (Lion Brand Hometown USA in Portland Wine) and used less than one skein for this pattern.  I forgot how much a stockinette stitch rolls under but for a headband so the headband has a definite tendency to roll inward on itself.  It is not a huge problem, as you can press it flat when putting it on.  The pictures are all the original pattern I made in stockinette stitch, but I have adjusted the pattern so that it won't roll under for your project. :)  The updated pattern can be found here.

A note on the following photos:
One morning it was snowing and I wanted to take pictures of myself in the headband and mittens.  I rigged up a makeshift tripod consisting of 2 stools and a kickball trophy and balanced my camera on one tier of the trophy, and set the timer on my camera.  If you scroll really fast, it kind of looks like a flip book!  Enjoy!

Crocheted T-shirt Rug

I made two rugs for my mom's laundry room out of old T-shirts.  My parents recently remodeled their house and painted their laundry room a very happy orange.  Mom loved the T-shirt rug my Aunt Nancy crocheted for her kitchen and asked me if I could make some for her.  So Mom gathered tons of colorful shirts and cut them into the strips, and I got my Q-hook out and began crocheting.

Materials:
Several T-shirts in whatever colors you would like
Q-crochet hook
Needle and thread

Directions:
Cut T-shirts into ~1 inch continuous strips.  I would always cut starting from the bottom and wind my way up until I got to the sleeves.  I would cut the sleeves from the shirt and open up the shirt so that it is like a square with the neck hole in the middle. Then I cut around the neck hole, getting closer and closer until there was no more T-shirt to work with.  Once you cut up the entire T-shirt, roll the "yarn" into a ball so it is easy to work with and move on to the next shirt.  After you have a sufficient amount of T-shirts cut up, begin crocheting.  Using a Q-hook, chain as many as you would like and make your rug varying widths.  The long rug is about 30 stitches wide and I cannot remember how many I did for the smaller rug.  Continue single crocheting until the rug is the desired length.  Switch colors by cutting the working color and sewing the end of the next color on securely with your needle and thread.
